Notes from the IBEW Women's Conference 2000

Time management

By Deborah Ferrer

“Time might be our most precious commodity; we can’t save it, we can only spend it.”

At the IBEW Women’s Conference 2000, I had the opportunity to attend a pre-conference workshop which presented tips and techniques for managing time wisely.

One technique that I found valuable was to create a list of tasks that needed to be done which could then be prioritized by order of importance. Pick out the top three items and put them on your daily calendar. Work on each task, one at a time and avoid jumping into the next task until the first one has been completed.

I have applied this technique both at work and at home and found that not only was it valuable in organizing work processes, but it also allowed me to have more time for myself. By having only three tasks on my calendar at a time, I don’t feel as overwhelmed, and I get satisfaction as each task is completed, knowing I have used my time effectively and efficiently.

A four-page handout is available through the Union Hall if you are interested in learning about the other techniques used in time management.

Oh, by the way, I was glad this was my first workshop. I did not manage my time very effectively—it was the only class I was late to!
