Working together, we get the job done

By Frank Miramontes, Local 18 President

Although shorthanded in virtually every area, members from a number of units cooperated to get Valley Generating on line by the June target date. Crews from Generation, ISS and ESM put out that extra effort to bring the station, mothballed for the past two years, on line May 25. On June 1 it was making full load. Coordination between the units was excellent. It was short notice, we were shorthanded, and we got the job done on time anyway. Great job!

Unfortunately, running shorthanded is getting to be a way of life in many units. This is great for a while; everyone gets some overtime and the extra money is welcome. But day after day and week after week can take a toll on a person. Be careful and get the rest and recreation you need to be a safe and smart worker.

Speaking of safety, the Worker Safety Subcommittee on Clerical Issues deserves a lot of credit for their new program of ergonomic training. The department is replacing its PCs with leased equipment. Starting with the AOB and West LA Call Centers, an ergonomics training program and model work station demonstration is offered at the facilities in conjunction with the changeout. Clerical workers have been able to try out the ergonomic alternatives and select the ones that work. The coordination and planning that made this possible demonstrates the value of the labor-management team approach that we have actively developed over the past few years.
