Incident Prevention & Investigation Skills Workshop

at Scattergood Generating Station May 31 and June 1 was an intensive hands-on experience for 20 members of the Generation Business Unit Worker Safety Group. After a day of classroom discussion and exercise led by Karl Leist, the group broke into teams and went out on the units to investigate a made-up incident based on a real occurrence.

“We are trying to make a cultural shift from faultfinding to fact-finding,” Leist said, “with an emphasis on preventing incidents from happening in the first place. It is very encouraging to see the effective participation and enthusiastic buy-in by labor and management.”

“We want to prevent accidents from happening,” said John LaPinta, Safety and Training Coordinator for the Generation Business Unit. “I hope the people in this training exercise will spread the word to the people in their stations and help promote a safer workplace.”

“This workshop is an excellent example of the new safety programs we are developing throughout the Department,” said Local 18 President Frank Miramontes. “We are confident that the Worker Safety Group program will yield tangible results and permanently improve working conditions as well as the efficiency and reliability of the system.”
