Seven committees lead the L/M process

by Local 18 President Frank Miramontes

Last month I wrote about some of the ways in which the joint labor/management committees have produced tangible, significant improvements in the DWP. I thought it would be good to follow up with some discussion of how those committees are constituted and who is actually serving on them.

The charter establishes seven standing committees (listed below) and specifies that they will be made up of an equal number of members appointed by Local 18 and DWP management. The DWP General Manager and the Local 18 Business Manager are ex-officio members of all committees, and both must accept agreements by any committee before they are considered final. From day one, we have put a considerable amount of time and energy into selecting labor’s representatives. We have sought to be inclusive and to promote representation from the broad range of our diverse workforce. At the same time, we have looked for members who bring the expertise and maturity necessary to make the committees effective.

The success of the committees is a tribute to the quality of the people who serve on them. They deserve praise and recognition, and all members should know who they are. These people represent the first line for suggestions and recommendations to improve the workplace.
